WHAT IS THE IDEAL AGE FOR BRACES / ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?
Early permanent dentition age is considered as the golden age for orthodontic tretament that is between 11- 19 years of age. However, nowadays because of the technological advancements it can be done at any age , provided periodontal support is good.
According to American Assosciation of Orthodontics right age for the first orthodontic consultation is 7 years, to evaluate growth and development of the dento-facial structures and to monitor thereof , if required in case of any deviation from normalcy.
In case of upper jaw / mid face deficiency (skeletal class 3) malocclusion , the ideal age to start treatment is at 8 years of age.
Incase of jaw size tooth size discrepancy, the ideal age to monitor the growth and development is from 8 years of age onwards.
For lower jaw retrusion / deficiency (skeletal class 2) malocclusion , the ideal age to start the treatment is at late mixed dentition period, that is from 10 – 13 years.
WHAT ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR BRACES TREATMENT?
Oral hygiene instructions during orthodontic treatment:
Brushing twice daily with special orthodontic brushes
Use interdental brush in the areas between braces where normal brush cantle reached.
FOOD RESTRICTIONS DURING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?
FRUITS – SLICE/ CUT INTO SMALL PIECES
Foods to avoid:
Biting on Hard foods like guava, corn on the cobra vegetables like Carrot, beetroot
Sticky food items like candy, chewing gums, caramel, toffee
Non vegetarians should have strictly boneless food
DO I HAVE TO REMOVE TEETH OR DO EXTRACTION OF TEETH FOR BRACES?
NOT ALWAYS. Our first priority is always to do the braces treatment without extraction/ removal of teeth. However, at times we may have to advice for the removal of teeth if the teeth are severely protruded, severely crooked or maltose to gain space. In this instance, it will be discussed priorly during your first consultation ( during treatment planning phase) at our orthodontic centre, and only after the patient’s and the guardian’s consent we will advice for extraction and we do it meticulously without much discomfort .
We ensure that the gap is closed completely by the end of the treatment.
HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WEAR THE DENTAL BRACES/CLIPS?
DURATION OF ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?
Usually between 8 MONTHS TO 1 YEAR, depending on the severity of malocclusion.
With FAST BRACES, the duration can be reduced to 6 months.
Fast braces is the accelerated orthodontic treatment modality.
IS BRACES TREATMENT PAINFUL?
Fixing the braces is totally PAINLESS and does not require anaesthesia.
We need to activate the braces, on monthly basis and during this mild discomfit will persist for a day or two which can be managed easily.
We use the latest advanced technology and materials so that the braces treatment go very smoothly and will not disturb any routine daily activities.
You don’t require to take leave for even a single day during the entire period of orthodontic treatment.
DO MY TEETH LOOSEN/ WEAKEN AFTER THE DENTAL BRACES / ORTHO TREATMENT?
TEETH LOOSEN BECAUSE OF GUM PROBLEMS RELATED TO POOR ORAL HYGIENE MAINTENANCE AND NOT BECAUSE OF BRACES.
WE GIVE SPECIAL AND SPECIFIC ORAL HYGIENE INSTRUCTIONS WHICH ARE SIMPLE TO FOLLOW AND WE WILL BE MONITORING YOUR oral hygiene status so that there is no possibility of teeth loosening/ weakening.
DOES MY TEETH RELAPSE / GO BACK TO THE ORIGINAL POSITION AFTER ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?
Avoiding the relapse is the most important part of orthodontic treatment and we give utmost importance to this aspect.
After braces treatment, it will be followed by RETAINERS.
Retainers are 2 types: –
Removable retainers are acrylic plate with wire appliance, which has to be worn all the time except during meals.
Disadvantages of removable retainer:
It has to be removed each time while having food.
At Many times, people forget to wear it back after food, resulting in relapse.
This repeated removing and placing it back, will loosen the appliance and may cause relapse.
It requires good brushing/ cleaning of the appliance, otherwise, it will lead to bad breath
There are chances of breakage, if it falls down
Removable retainer requires frequent visit orthodontist even after orthodontic treatment
WHICH IS THE BEST RETAINER?
No doubt, fixed retainers/ bonded lingual retainers are the best retainers
Fixed retainers are bonded on the lingual/ back surface of the teeth using special procedure.
ADVANTAGES OF FIXED RETAINERS:
Totally comfortable and no pain
Do not require fret visit to orthodontist after braces treatment
Easy or no maintenance required
Best part- chances of relapse is NIL or very very rare

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WEAR THE RETAINERS?
Usually 1 year fixed retainers are totally invisible and comfortable
DO I GET MOUTH ULCERS / SORE MOUTH DURING BRACES TREATMENT?
It will take a few days to get accustomed to the braces.
We advice precautionary measures to be followed to avoid most ulcers during this period.
Later on. There will not be ulcer issue
CAN THE GUMMY SMILE (excessive gum display) BE CORRECTED WITH BRACES?
YES. it can be corrected to some extent with the braces and cosmetic dentistry beyond which it can be corrected with surgery.
WILL I HAVE SPEECH PROBLEM / DISTURBANCE DURING BRACES?
IS THE BRACES TREATMENT COVERED BY INSURANCE?
This depends on the insurance coverage you have opted or your company provides.
CAN WE EXPAND THE JAWS BY BRACES?
YES. It can be done during the growing age of upto 15 years. After this age, dental arch can be expanded using the arch wires to some extent.
DOES MOUTH BREATHING / THUMB SUCKING / TONGUE TRUSTING CAUSE TEETH / DENTAL PROTRUSION / PROCLINATION?
It depends on the duration, intensity and frequency of the habit.
We do have habit breaking appliances to help stop these j=habits.
DOES MY FACIAL APPEARANCE CHANGE AFTER BRACES?
With proper diagnosis and treatment planning , we make sure that the facial appearance improves.
CAN THE LENGTH OF THE TOOTH / TEETH ( long Teeth) BE REDUCED / SHORTENED?
YES it can be done with cosmetic dentistry and braces. it is a very common problem and the treatment results are good.
MY TEETH ARE PROTRUDED ( placed front) , CAN IT BE CORRECTED?
YES it can be corrected with the braces. we routinely do this
